References are a buying signal

References are a buying signal. Rather than offer your references, wait until asked. Gather 3-6 references representing 360 degree feedback - your immediate boss (if possible), peers, subordinates, customers and vendors. Be sure to have their permission to be on your list, give them your most appropriate resume, and bring your list to interviews. Wait to be asked. Once you give your references, call them telling them to expect to be called and what would be helpful for them to say about you. Ask your references to loop back to you on the success of the call.
